Here's a picture of the front engine, front wheel drive car Mickey Thompson brought to Indy the year after Eddie Sachs and Dave McDonald were killed in the fiery crash in 1964. Bob Mathouser drove the car and had an engine failure on his "Q" run, but the car still holds the IMS front wheel drive, one lap speed record of 153.374. The slowest car in the field that year ran a 4-lap avg. of 153.770, the Mathouser/Thompson car almost made the show, and would have became one of the ugliest cars ever to race at Indy. Mathouser sat above the rear axel housing and it appears that the Chevy exhaust dumped into and against the slipstream.
